The method of creation of the Locus Solus novella, similar to African Impressions and his other works, was revealed posthumously by Raymond Roussel in his text How I Wrote Some of My Books. It was born from the formal restriction that the author followed, when he took two similar words, added to them words that were the same, but having two meanings, and thus obtained two almost identical sentences, on the basis of which he then builds the entire text. The eminent scientist and inventor Martial Canterel invites a group of his colleagues and friends to visit his country estate, Locus Solus. He shows visitors increasingly bizarre inventions crowned by a living image, actually represented by dead people brought back to life with the help of resurrectin liquid, which, when injected into a fresh corpse, makes it repeat the most important event of its life. Raymond Roussel, misunderstood and disparaged during his lifetime, although a completely original author whose work received negative reactions, eventually won the admiration of surrealist groups and other avant-garde authors.

Způsob vzniku novely Locus Solus, podobně jako Afrických dojmů a dalších svých děl, Raymond Roussel odhalil až posmrtně ve svém textu Jak jsem psal některé své knihy. Zrodil se z formálního omezení, kterým se autor řídil, kdy vzal dvě podobná slova, přidal k nim slova sice stejná, ale mající dva významy, a získal tak dvě téměř identické věty, na jejichž základě pak staví celý text. Význačný vědec a vynálezce Martial Canterel pozve skupinu svých kolegů a přátel k návštěvě svého venkovského sídla Locus Solus. Návštěvníkům předvádí stále bizarnější vynálezy korunované živým obrazem, ve skutečnosti představovaným mrtvými lidmi oživenými pomocí tekutiny resurrectinu, která po vstříknutí čerstvou mrtvolu nutí opakovat nejdůležitější událost jejího života. Raymond Roussel, za svého života nepochopený a znevažovaný, byť naprosto originální autor, jehož dílo obdrželo negativní reakce, se nakonec dočkal obdivu surrealistických skupin a dalších avantgardních autorů.
